Placement Auditions for the 2020-2021 school year is coming up quickly!
Auditions will be held during Midterm week (January 21st-24th). Current students enrolled in dance will take their Placement Audition in class. Students who are NOT currently enrolled in a dance class will need to attend an afterschool placement audition on Thursday, January 23rd from 2:45-4:45pm. This would include students who are currently enrolled at Garner High School as well as upcoming 9th grade students (currently in middle school) Placement Auditions will be held in the dance room, room 1607 Please make sure that you have the following dates on your calendar:
(1) Senior Dinner on Wednesday, May 15th, 2019. All modern 2, 3, and advanced dance SENIOR students are invited to attend the senior dinner at the Melting Pot restaurant at 5PM. If these senior students are interested in attending, they need to see Mrs. Comden to indicate their interest. In order to be able to attend, they first need to make sure that all dance Fairshare from this school year and previous school years has been paid off (due date for this: Friday, May 10th). Students must also turn in $20.00 to help cover the cost of a portion of the meal (due date: Tuesday, May 14th-will not accept this the day of due to reservation requirements). (2) Dance Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 21st, 2019. All students from the entire dance department are invited to attend. This event is free to attend. The Ceremony begins at 7pm; if you are a GMHS Dance Dept. student, please arrive early-around 6:30pm so that Mrs. Comden and the Dance Boosters can best prepare for the ceremony. Please attend so we can acknowledge your achievements! (3) IB Cording Ceremony on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019. This is a ceremony for IB students to accept their cords. The IB Dance Class has been invited to perform at this event. The ceremony begins at 6PM and dancers are asked to be here at 5:30PM to make sure costumes and music is ready to go. Our performance of the Nutcracker has been rescheduled to Wednesday, December 19th, 2018 at 7pm. We hope to see you there!

Important Information coming up:
~We have just received some extra DvD copies of last school year's dance concerts (2016) and this school year's winter dance concert. Please let me know if you are in need of a copy. The cost is $10. For this year's concert, we will be sending home an order form in the event that you would like a copy of your child's performance. Please keep your eye out for this important form. Order forms will also be available on concert day. The copies will be ready during exam week for pickup. ~Please do not forget that fairshare and candy money is due. Students were sent home with an index card last month with their total balance. ~Thursday, April 20th: Help the dance department complete posters promoting the upcoming dance concerts (this is optional)! Any interested dance students can join us in room 1209 on South campus. Our goal is to fill the auditorium with as many audience members as possible and this will help promote these wonderful shows! ~Monday, May 1st: ticket pre-order forms will be distributed to the students (tickets in advance are $6 and $8 at the door). Purchasing advance tickets will run from Monday, May 1st to Friday, May 19th. ~Monday, May 8th: Dance Awards Night for students in the GMHS Dance Program. Join us at 7pm in the South Garner Auditorium ~Monday, May 15th: Please plan on attending our Menchies night fundraiser, where a portion of the proceeds will go toward the dance department ~Tuesday, May 16th and Monday, May 22nd: for our 9th grade students who take class on the 9th grade campus, this is a mandatory afterschool rehearsal on South campus in order for the students to practice onstage before dress rehearsal. The rehearsals will run from 2:30-4:45pm. This is for Mrs. Comden's A1 and A2 Modern 1 classes only. Unfortunately, I just found out that there was a major conflict for the original dates, so your child may have a different date written down in their notes; these are the corrected dates. Please let me know if you have a prior engagement already for these dates as soon as possible. ~Monday, May 22nd: Senior bow practice. For our senior students interested in being a part of a featured section in our concert bow, please plan on attending this special rehearsal. This is for senior students in the dance department only. ~Tuesday, May 23rd: Dress rehearsal for students involved in dance concert #1: Beginning Modern (1A) A.Comden, Beginning Modern (2B) A.Comden, Intermediate Ballet (2B) Shakur, Intermediate Modern (3B) Shakur, Beginning Ballet (4B) Shakur, IB A.Comden. Students will need to be prepared to attend this from 3-6pm in the South Garner Auditorium. Students who do not attend dress rehearsal cannot be involved in the concert ~Wednesday, May 24th: Dance Concert for students involved in dance concert #1. Students will need to arrive before 5pm for student check-in ~Thursday, May 25th: Dress rehearsal for students involved in dance concert #2: Beginning Modern (2A) A.Comden, Beginning Modern (1B) A.Comden, Beginning Ballet (4A) Shakur, Proficient Modern (2A) Shakur, World Cultures (3A) Shakur, IB A.Comden. Students will need to be prepared to attend this from 3-6pm in the South Garner Auditorium. Students who do not attend dress rehearsal cannot be involved in the concert ~Friday, May 26th: Dance Concert for students involved in dance concert #2. Students will need to arrive before 5pm for student check-in~Please do not forget that fairshare and candy money is due. Students were sent home with an index card last month with their total balance. On Thursday, March 2nd the Dance Department will be hosting an interest meeting for the NHSDA. This meeting will be for students who are currently enrolled in intermediate or advanced-level dance classes at Garner High. For the first meeting, interested Seniors & Juniors may attend. Please arrive in dance room 1210 on South Garner Campus no later than 2:30pm. Specific information will be provided at the meeting, please let either Mrs. Shakur or Mrs. Comden if you cannot make it but would like to be a part of the NHSDA.
Don't forget to come out to the GMHS Curriculum Carnival which will be on Thursday, February 8th from 6-8pm! This will be a great opportunity to figure out what classes you are interested in taking next year. Please see your teacher to figure out what day you will be registering for your 2017-2018 classes.
